The Delicate Work Begins

on Apr 26,2020

We have officially started working on the rest of the Delicate Nature of Things EP. I will be documenting the progress of this new collection of music on a blog series here called DNT. Currently, we’re planning a fall release for six songs including “Ordinary Days”, a digital single we released earlier this month.

We began planning Delicate Nature of Things all the way back in late summer of 2018. Starting with about twenty demos, all of which were in various stages of completion, we narrowed the list down to about a dozen songs and slowly worked on them in 2019. We also recorded a handful of covers last year, both songs we had been playing live and others that we just wanted to explore.

As 2020 began we further narrowed the Delicate Nature of Things list down to six songs, and decided to finish and release “Ordinary Days” first. It’s a song that we played live a couple of times in 2019 and we felt great about it being a representation of how our sound has been evolving. Along with “Ordinary Days”, we also released two of the covers we had worked on, and three remixes of tracks from our 2017 album CoalescE.

Now, pre-production on the rest of the tracks has begun, starting with a song tentatively called “Open” that has been floating around for a few years. I set up a small demo studio in the living room of my house so I could work on music more quickly and casually than disappearing into my studio up on the third floor. This also allows me to work with a nice fire in the fireplace during chilly and rainy spring evenings.

Delicate Nature of Things comes from a lyric in “Open”: I couldn’t see the true nature of things, how delicate, delicate life can be. In a way, this song is the title track of the collection, and it might be renamed to reflect that. It has already been through a few iterations and will likely go through a couple more before we’re ready to start tracking it.

To help us realize the rest of this album, we are working with Jon Chinn as a co-producer and engineer. Jon has been involved with Here Inside since the very beginning, mixing and/or mastering various recordings. I have loved his contributions to our music, so I asked him to be more involved with this project in terms of brainstorming ideas and working collaboratively during the entire creative process. He’s located in Brooklyn, NY, so we’ll be doing this work remotely.

“Ordinary Days” plus bonus tracks.
