[Journal] Mixing CoalescE

on Jan 18,2017

We mixed the album between the last week of December 2016 and the second week of January 2017. This is the part of the process where everything comes together. Musicians often joke that you can “always fix it in the mix”, which essentially means the performance doesn’t have to be perfect because you can do a tremendous amount of editing and “fixing” when you’re mixing the songs. That’s true…to an extent.

We had a long break between tracking and mixing, which was good because it allowed us to review the mixes with fresh ears, but we hadn’t reviewed the actual takes enough after the recording process to evaluate if they were all keepers. Most of the songs had at least a line or two that weren’t quite right. We did our share of tweaking and editing during this part of the process, but sometimes you have to just go in and record something again. That was the case with “Pressure”, where we weren’t satisfied with Anne’s final vocal take, so we recut it during the mixing process. We’re both really glad that we did, as what we ended with sounds great!

Here are some more of my thoughts about the mixing process for CoalescE.
