Starboard EP

Starboard is a four-song instrumental EP that covers a full range of sounds from the bombastic to the ethereal. The band recorded the basic tracks while on retreat at a private residence on the Susquehanna River in western Lancaster County during January 2015. They finished tracking at The Candy Factory in Lancaster, PA February – March 2015. The EP was mixed and mastered by Jon Chinn, Workbook Studio, NYC.

*In addition to the four songs form Starboard, the band performed two other ambient pieces one that including samples from an interview with David Lynch about the creative process. The January 17 performance included a vocal version of The Box and a cover of the Portishead song, Glory Box.

The Story:

Here Inside spent the first 10 months of 2014 heads-down in the rehearsal studio working on a conceptual multimedia project. Personnel changes left keyboardist Jason Mundok and drummer Kelly McClain at a crossroad. They could try to recruit a new band and push forward with the concept project, or take a break and do something completely different. McClain suggested spending a couple sessions exploring some organic ambient and experimental sounds with no rules. Those sessions formed the framework for the instrumental EP Starboard. With a few showcases already booked for December 2014 and January 2015, the two considered devoloping the pieces as a duo, but soon recruited bassist Michael Bridgman and saxophonist Randy Bucksner to fill out the sound. Vocalist Anne Kirby followed to play on the third of three showcases featuring the new material. “The whole thing sort of fell together and suddenly we were back with a full band and a nice 30 minute set of music to showcase,” Mundok said.
